artorias analysis on the imminent israeli invasion of lebanon
Israel is postured to conduct an imminent invasion into Southern Lebanon with little to no additional warning. Israel has deployed over five brigades consisting of armored and engineer units with a WSJ report indicating that Israeli Special Forces are already operating inside Lebanon, specifically targeting Hezbollah tunnels. In addition, the Lebanese Armed Forces have announced they are withdrawing from border observation posts and relocated to barracks in nearby towns.
The Israeli military conducted airstrikes targeting Hezbollah infrastructure and personnel across Lebanon, resulting in casualties. In addition, Israel has increased artillery strikes across Southern Lebanon likely serving as preparatory fires for a ground invasion. The Israeli military also conducted airstrikes in Gaza, targeting Hamas and other Palestinian groups. The US has expressed concern over the escalation and called for a de-escalation of the conflict, with President Biden speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Hezbollah launched numerous rockets, drone and artillery attacks on Israeli towns and settlements such as Zaaoura, Yiftach, Kfar Giladi and Beit Sida in retaliation for Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon and Gaza. Hezbollah reportedly launched a Fada 1 missile against Haifa with Israel claiming the missile impacted an unpopulated area.
Israel has stated their objective is to cripple Hezbollah as a military organization and views that it can only achieve that with an invasion into Southern Lebanon. This action risks drawing in additional actors, such as Iran, widening the conflict into a regional war.
